After deciding to open CrossFit Malibu over 3 years ago, there were a few possibilities for what kind of CrossFit facility to have. One thought was to buy an old milk truck (think: Malcolm's big grey and graffiti covered van) and convert it into a Mobile CrossFit Assault Vehicle. Racks to hold barbells, KB, dumbbells, a pull up structure that connects to the outside like a canopy. We would have posted the location to meet each day on the blog so that members would check the night before to see the WOD and where that day's meeting spot would be. It would have been fun- like Fight Club, a scavenger hunt and CrossFit all rolled into one.
Then one day mid-summer 2009, Robert (member #007) saw the For Rent sign up at the Hut. We leased the space and the idea for CrossFit Malibu Mobile Assault was over. BUT you can get an idea of that would have been like this coming Saturday morning at Zuma Beach. An 830am yoga class followed by a 10am WOD.
Looking forward to it.

I like that the Hut doesn't feel pre-fabricated and corporate. If there's a distinction between "a building where CrossFit happens" and "a building where people use CrossFit to hang out and get fit," it's found in a place like the Hut. Kudos to Mike, Scott, and all the other members who have given the Hut (and CFM) true character in a sport that's getting more mainstream and formalized by the day.
