Eating Out; Why Zone? part III, by Tom

Here are a few things Tom has put to practice with respect to eating out while Zoning that have helped him become our Zone Poster Boy!  Let us know if you have more suggestions.  It seems that with all the out of town travel that members have been doing (and lots of meals out) the phrase "You are only one meal away from the Zone" has come in handy!

I am still psyched by the amount of you Zoning... AND the response I hear from results are great- and not too surprising. Keep up the effort and keep sharing your experiences with others at the Hut... it helps.

1) Eat a Zone snack before going out. 2) Avoid pre-meal bread/rolls. 3) Focus on what restaurants might consider "low-fat" entrees. For example, meat (especially poultry, salmon, etc.). 4) Order side dishes that you recognize from the block chart. 5) Only eat enough from your plate to fill your protein and carb blocks. (How to estimate: A four-block portion of meat is about the size of your hand minus fingers; favorable carbs, about twice that.) 6) Remember to set aside carb blocks for any wine, dessert, etc. 7) In fast-food restaurants, avoid French fries, buns, and sugar. 8) One strategy for fast food especially but also for any restaurant: focus on meat -- especially chicken -- then keep apples and almonds in the car for carb/fat blocks.
